I was just thinking about how you live in LA, its a lonely place. (At least from my experience) You’re not alone though. Or a sociopath. I have been there, the same place that you are feeling – no one understands. Over the years, I changed that mindset to “Do I understand myself”, “Do I know what I want”, “What can I do to help me understand myself” instead of thinking of those around me. Because ultimately, we are all individuals. I am in a committed relationship right now and sometimes we don’t really see eye to eye. As selfish as this sounds, I don’t really care too much about it, I’ll explain to him where I’m coming from and hope he gets it. If he doesn’t, I accept that its a difference I have. TCKs are different, but we’re not sociopaths or weird. We are just exposed to different things, and the way we think is influenced by our multiple cultural influences, our family, our surroundings, and what we’re exposed to.
I met Ruth Van Reken at Families in Global Transitions conference in March and she said that TCKs are not weird, its other people that make us feel weird. We need to normalize our experience and share it as much as we can.
The way I see it… There are going to be people that you won’t be able to get along with. You can’t let toxic people get you down. Don’t worry John, you will find your way. Give it patience.
