Moving to the U.S.

In a few short months I will be starting a new chapter in my life. I am not sure wether to be nervous or excited.

I decided to go to college in the U.S. and, in order for me to not go completely crazy at such a drastic change, live with my aunt for the first few years.

Am I proud of this? I’m not sure. My sister went to college all by herself in the U.S. and has done perfectly fine, so I do feel a bit embarrased at the fact that I don’t feel ready to take that huge leap. Instead I play it safe by deciding to stay with my aunt the first few years and take a few courses at a community college.

Cowardly? I don’t think so. But maybe it is.

My main fear is that although I am good at being a chameleon when it comes to different cultures, once I get to the U.S. I will probably be bombarded with so many cultures at the same time. This has happened before when I went to a U.S. highschool for a semester; all the different cultures made it difficult for me to immediately discern how to speak with certain people, what tone of voice, what body language or what kind of humour is acceptable. I love learning about different cultures, but I usually need a few moments to be able to adapt to the “style” people have in order to communicate and feel at home. I just don’t want to offend anyone or make a teacher get angry because I did something that is considered rude or unnaceptable.

Thoughts?

Yes, well, I’m new, but I’m sure I will feel at home here 🙂

Hello Peter! I just got here about two days ago. I am exhausted, looking for a job and will be starting my studies in January when I move down to Oklahoma (i am in Seattle right now). Alot of things in the U.S. have left me perplexed, I will probably write something in a few days about my first few days in the U.S.
