@ leave home on 4 hours notice.
you also little control over your life at sea. So you have to work 12 hour shifts, eat food that you haven’t chosen, at times that are allocated. Bad weather may mean that you don’t sleep properly and you have to work everyday until you go home.So it pays to really research the companies and find out how many sea…[Read more]

@ That may be the case. With your CV they would expect a sound theoretical background and would then teach you the practical stuff. Some companies are better at training than others, but there’s usually quite a lot of money at stake in terms of the value of the data you’re collecting so they’re unlikely to throw you in by yourself. you also have…[Read more]

@ Hi Olivia – Thanks for your reply to my question, that was quite helpful! I spent a long time trying to decide if I really wanted to do a PhD because I’m sure I don’t want to go into academia afterward. One other thing I wanted to ask was, as a new hire, did you just get thrown into the job or was there some on-the-job training or a kind of…[Read more]

@ Hi Evelyn,
Im a Belgian tck who just moved here for the first time at 24, doing a Masters in Anthropology in Leuven. I’m interested, not just from an academic view, to create some sort of a Belgian tck group who might meet up every couple of weeks, and just hang out.. I think its sort of our responsibility to help each other out, and spread the…[Read more] -

@ Hi Tasha, thank you for the comment.
I have begun reading Third Culture Kids: The Experience Among Worlds for my research paper & it has started helping me therapeutically but have not reached “Section Two: Maximizing the Benefits”. I think that will help me get through this depressing feeling I get so very often.I think it will be healthy for…[Read more]

@ part 2
Big offshore companies aside, there are some smaller companies and government institutions (eg Environmental Monitoring Unit in the UK or Maritime Queensland Australia in Australia) that are more interesting and have a broader skills set. These companies always require office time so you’d have to live nearby. Time at sea is usually added…[Read more] -

@ Hey Susan,
Good to hear from you.
I actually did a BSc in Marine Biology and then an MSc in Hydrography. When it comes to survey the qualification that are most desirable are those categorised by the IHO-International Hydrographic Organisation as Category A. For Msc courses I know Uni of Otago (New Zealand), Uni New Brunswick (Canada) and Uni…[Read more] -

@ Hi Veronica, nobody seems to have posted on your wall yet! Had a look at the Open House website. Love the concept! How do you find the time. I presume you work full time too! Just wish my French was good… I did learn some at school but always struggled with it. Perhaps too many languages around at the time. I have considered learning another…[Read more]

@ Nobody seems to have posted on your wall yet Natalie! Welcome to TCKid. I am intrigued by your work as a volunteer. I know so many TCKs who get involved in social and relationship issues in society. How much of your work are you able to mention on TCKid without compromising confidentiality. As for me I am in the Midlands.

@ Hi Olivia – I saw that you work as a hydrographic surveyor. Some other people have asked this and I was also wondering what you studied at Uni to get into this career. I also want to go into hydrographic survey and I was wondering how hard it was for you to find a survey job and if you could choose from jobs around the world or if most jobs…[Read more]

@ Hi Beatriz, I’m new to this website and very happy I found it!
You should read Third Culture Kids, The Experiance of Growing Up Among World by David Pollock and Ruth Van Reken. The book rocked my world and became my second Bible! It was soo freeing to reaslise, a) I’m not crazy and b) I’m not the only one out there!
Anyway, enjoy the website!

@ Hi Nadya, welcome to TCKid! Which Uni do you work at? I studied at Flinders Uni, but that’s very long time ago now! Have you found many other TCKs in Adelaide? It would be good to form an Adelaide TCKid catch up, wouldn’t it?
Take care,
